Hi Francis and Kulture Break,

Prior to Legacy Expo 2012 and Kulture Break James was being bullied and hurt because he is a gentle kid who would and could never hurt anyone, but because he loved to dance and sing and due to his autism, he was bullied for being different and it was heart breaking. We as a family lost a very happy child and he withdrew from the world and into himself. Then Kulture Break happened at school and from there it’s been a one-way ride to happiness for James. Once the kids saw James dance and saw how good he was it changed the way he was viewed…

I had to share this with you, James has been made House Captain at school. He had the confidence to write a speech about why he would be good in the role, and the words he used he learnt their true meaning through Kulture Break. He told the kids that he would encourage the school to reach for the stars and that, like him, they are somebody! He said that Kulture Break is like any sport where he will lead and encourage everyone to just do their best.

Wanted to share to again highlight how your words and actions have inspired a kid like James to rise above and succeed.

Kind regards

Megan O’Heire

Welcome to 2013 with Kulture Break! This year we’re joining with the rest of Canberra in celebrating our Centenary. It’s a big year ahead and one of the things we’re most excited about is our school’s Centenary Project called Dance Nation. This is the largest project we’ve undertaken and sees us working in 23 schools across the ACT with over 460 young people participating. I’ve personally been working back in schools, which is extremely rewarding and has allowed me to see firsthand how ecstatic the children are about being involved in the project. The performance for this will take place during our Community Benefit Festival from the 27th – 29th June. We have some great things planned for the Festival, including an underage dance party with appearances from Justice Crew and DJ’s.

You can read below for more details on this, it’s going to be BIG!

Apart from Dance Nation our afternoon classes have started for the term and are going well. We have had our largest number of enrollments in the history of Kulture Break, with over 750 children across the ACT involved in our dance programs, so it’s definitely a big year.

Also, many of you may be aware that earlier in the year I was honoured and humbled to receive the ACT Local Hero of the year award. A great byproduct of being honoured with such an award is that it opens opportunities for me to work in schools and tackle one of the issues I’m really passionate about – schoolyard bullying. Being someone who has experienced this myself, I know the power it can have in shaping a persons life. Having the opportunity to speak to young people about this issue means that we can break it. I have already completed a number of motivational talks in schools emphasising our philosophy here at Kulture Break, that ‘you don’t need to become somebody, you are somebody.’

On other news, we welcome Sandy …. from America who is joining us downunder for six weeks to conduct some of our International programs. We’ve just launched our first Internship Program, have two new crews and this week we start our Man-Up, Ladies 1st and Kulture Break Dance Academy programs.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors and partners for their continued support of the organisation, without whom we would not be able to achieve so much. A big thank you to Elite Sound and Lighting, etc

Looking forward to a great year with you!

Francis Owusu
CEO, Kulture Break

“You don’t know me but my son James was lucky enough to be part of the legacy expo on Friday night. James has high functioning autism and this year for him has been so very hard. The children at his school are now able to see how different he is and I hate to say it but he has been the victim of a number of bullying situations. We are very worried about life as he gets older and struggle every day to try and make him fit into this very strange world.
James has loved music and dance from a very young age and at the moment his idol is Michael Jackson, but when we asked him if he wanted to dance he told us no because the other kids at school would pick on him. Allowing him to shine on stage Friday night was something I really can’t express. He loved every second of his turn and was so proud that he was able to dance and hang out in the green room. James has asked to join Kulture Break and we will be putting him in classes. For a child like James this experience was one that came attached with high anxiety and yet he made it through and in my opinion rocked the house!

So from me a heart felt thank you for giving my son the chance to prove that being different does not stop you from taking centre stage and doing something you love to do. I really don’t think I can put into words how grateful I am to you and your team for giving my son the gift of dance and showing him that he is somebody. I am so glad we got to be part of this fantastic event.

Oh and I really liked the boys from Instant Bun, they had us in stiches and I was amazed at their moves.”
